The Makeup of a Martino Home Improvements Roof System

Martino Home Improvements installs complete roof systems using quality roofing materials from well-known manufacturers including Certainteed, Owens Corning and Tamko
A quality Michigan roof is more than just shingles. The harsh weather of southeast Michigan – frigid, snowy winters and hot, stormy summers – means your roof needs to perform at its peak all year long. Martino Home Improvements installs complete roof systems for residential and commercial applications that will protect your home and investment in every season for years to come.

Roof Deck Protection
Roof Deck protection consists of roofing underlayment – a layer of material between your roof deck and shingles that offers additional protection against moisture and wind. There are different kinds of roof underlayment, the most popular being tar paper. Tar paper is sold by thickness (gauge) and weight, with the most common being 15#. A typical roll of this felt covers 400 square feet of roof deck. The next step up in tar paper is the 30# felt roll, which covers 200 square feet. The 30# felt is twice the weight of the standard 15# felt, and offers significantly better protection. When using a premium shingle, the shingle manufacturers require the use of a synthetic underlayment. However, depending on the particular shingle and roof, care must be taken to select the correct synthetic underlayment, as many do not breath and will trap moisture. Martino Home Improvements will help you make the best choice when choosing a underlayment.

Low Slope Membrane
Low slope membrane, also know as a “peel and stick”, is a self-adhering, rolled shingle-type roofing system typically made from asphalt. Low slope is used on applications where shingles will not work, typical on slopes less than 3/12. Low slope was developed with the same long lasting material used in the shingles. Low slope comes in different colors to match the color of shingle we install on your roof.

Leak Barrier
Leak barrier is also known as “Ice and Water” or “Ice Shield”. Ice Shield was developed to protect your roof deck from water and ice. Martino Home Improvements installs Ice Shield along all roof lines where your roof meets your gutters, in valleys, and around all roof penetrations. Ice Shield is now a building code requirement, and must be installed 3 feet past the exterior wall. If you have a two foot soffit, your home requires 6 feet of Ice Shield. So, if some one tries to sell you Ice Shield as a premium product, it’s time to find a new roofer – they either don’t know what they’re doing or they are trying to squeeze more money for the job.

Drip Edge
Martino Home Imprvements installs drip edge (a.k.a. drip cap) to protect the fascia and lower edge of a roof by guiding water and melting ice directly into the gutter.

Starter Shingles
Martino Home Improvements installs manufactured starter shingles to prevent shingles blowing off. The starter shingle was developed with extra tar on each side to insure that the first course of shingles seals in this critical (and easily exposed) section of roof.

Shingles
Martino Home Improvements installs many different kind of shingles – from 3-tab transitional shingles and standard Architectural (dimensional) shingles, to stylish and long-lasting designer shingles. Martino will help you make the right decision based on the color and design you’re looking for, how long you would like your roof to last, and the right type of shingle for your roof. We do this everyday!!

Attic Ventilation
We can’t say it enough: Proper ventilation is CRITICAL for maintaining a healthy roof. We make sure you have the best ventilation system to make your roof last. Ventilation helps keep your roof at a moderate temperature through the summer and winter. Martino Home Improvements uses only the top of the line products to give you the best ventilation, insuring you have proper soffit vents, can vents, and determining when and where to use Smart Vent for air intake. We also update your home using the latest Ridge Vent System, a new ventilation system that is nailed to the ridge of your roof and provides proper exhaust for your home.

Ridge Cap
Ridge Cap is a type of shingle that is installed over the ridge and hip of your home. Ridge Cap comes in different thicknesses for varying levels of protection, and many styles to fit your particular roof’s look and design.
